There was so much blood, I thought, pressing down on the pool of blood at Rias’ chest. His muscles went limp under me, losing the tension that I knew in him. The flesh of his face whitened before me. He was dying. My fingers pushed down around the long orange blade of the knife, blood spilling around my shaking fingers.

“Rias!” I sobbed amber orange. The glow consumed the small boat around us. My Fear was like a monster devouring me, its long tentacles reaching over the walls of the boat, coiling around my arms and legs, threatening to haul us over the side and drag us down to the depths of the black water.

“Rias,” I pleaded. “Look at me!”

Off in the distance, violence erupted from the black tunnels. I could hear Claire somewhere yelling to Pellarian for cover or help, but I couldn’t worry about that now as I stared down at the blood soaking into Rias’ clothes. Should I pull out the knife? I knew logically that would only make things worse, but there was so much blood.

More men appeared, running on the small pathway of the dock, carrying long-guns. How many were Pellarian’s men and how many now belonged to Wade? I took in the terrifying prospect of them running at me, shooting the black-powder guns clutched in their fingers. I desperately fought to untie the line of the boat.

I turned in Wade’s direction and when I saw the hit ‘n throw in his hand, my mouth dropped open. No. Rias had almost gotten the ship’s knot untied, but that was before a blade was sunk down low in his chest. I tugged on the line, but the men drew closer and closer to us.

I cast a small dagger and sawed through the rope. I got it!

“Hold on please, Rias,” I sobbed desperately. For a brief instant, I was frozen as I heard the clattering sound of the hit ‘n throw impacting the ground close to me. The round explosive rolled and bounced on the dock. I kicked off the dock as hard as I could, sending the small long boat drifting away from the stone dock of the tunnel. The chaos of the land drifted away, but not fast enough. A deafening blast erupted behind the boat, sending shrapnel ripping through the sides of the wooden craft. I felt the wetness on my shoulder seep down around my elbow and down to my fingers. “Ash and Embers!” I cursed.

I could see the moonlight of the night bleeding into the mouth of the tunnel. One soldier came to the end of the dock and took aim at us. In a bloom of black, ashen smoke, a lead ball rocketed out of the long barrel. Desperately, I pulled on my emotion in a frantic ardentcast. A wall of shielding sprang to life, catching the ball with its scales of iron.

“I will kill you!” Wade roared. Several barrels were raised in my direction. My mouth gaped wide at what was about to happen.
